Synopsis

This workshop provides an overview of three key areas of investigation in our creative process in making Room: A Corporeal Dialogue Across Time. We ask: 1) does the technology of motion capturing facilitate corporeal dialogue and activation of cultural memories? 2) If so, what does technology offer and add to the performance of the body? 3) How do we effectively design and program the relationship between movement and media elements? We will discuss methodologies, challenges, and discoveries at the heart of our collaboration that uses the technology of motion capturing to visualize traces of movement through images and activate specific sounds. We will invite the audience to participate in a live demonstration of the camera-based AI motion capture and media playback system and showcase the adaptability of this logic of connecting structured improvisation with media. We will end the workshop with a Q&A with the participants. 

Artists’ short bios

Originally from Chengdu, China, Jingqiu Guan is a filmmaker, choreographer, dancer, and scholar. She currently serves on the faculty at Duke University as an Assistant Professor of the Practice of Dance. Jingqiu has presented her dance films and documentaries in several film festivals in the US, the UK, India, Norway, Spain, Austria, Italy, Turkey, Mexico, mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. Centering voices and expressions of women, immigrants, people of color, as well as people of disabilities, her works engage with the exploration of cultural identities, and motherhood, and address issues of racial justice and disability justice.

Augustus E. Wendell is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Art, Art History, and Visual Studies at Duke University. Augustus completed his MFA in Computer Art at The School of Visual Arts and his undergraduate studies at Northeastern University. Augustus has held appointments at Parsons the New School for Design, The New York School of Interior Design, Virginia Tech, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Augustus researches the application of computational processes to design, fine art, and historical research. He has a concentration on the application of computational workflows to aid in the study of complex geographic and spatial conditions.

Synopsis

Dieser Workshop bietet einen Überblick über drei wichtige Untersuchungsbereiche unseres kreativen Prozesses bei der Herstellung von Room: Ein Körperlicher Dialog Über die Zeit. Wir fragen: 1) erleichtert die Technologie der Bewegungserfassung einen körperlichen Dialog und die Aktivierung kultureller Erinnerungen? 2) Wenn ja, was bietet und trägt die Technologie zur Performance des Körpers bei? 3) Wie gestalten und programmieren wir effektiv die Beziehung zwischen Bewegung und Medienelementen? Wir werden Methoden, Herausforderungen und Entdeckungen diskutieren, die im Mittelpunkt unserer Zusammenarbeit stehen und die Technologie der Bewegungserfassung nutzen, um Spuren von Bewegung durch Bilder zu visualisieren und bestimmte Klänge zu aktivieren. Wir werden das Publikum zu einer Live-Demonstration des kamerabasierten KI-Bewegungserfassungs- und Medienwiedergabesystems einladen und die Anpassungsfähigkeit dieser Logik vorführen, die strukturierte Improvisation mit Medien verbindet. Wir werden den Workshop mit einer Fragerunde mit den Teilnehmern abschließen.

Kurzbiografien:

Ursprünglich aus Chengdu, China, ist Jingqiu Guan Filmemacherin, Choreografin, Tänzerin und Wissenschaftlerin. Derzeit ist sie als Assistenzprofessorin für Tanzpraxis an der Duke University tätig. Jingqiu hat ihre Tanzfilme und Dokumentationen auf mehreren Filmfestivals in den USA, Großbritannien, Indien, Norwegen, Spanien, Österreich, Italien, der Türkei, Mexiko, Festlandchina, Hongkong und Macau präsentiert. Ihre Werke, die die Stimmen und Ausdrucksformen von Frauen, Einwanderern, Menschen mit Farbe sowie Menschen mit Behinderungen in den Mittelpunkt stellen, beschäftigen sich mit der Erforschung kultureller Identitäten und Mutterschaft und behandeln Fragen der Rassen- und Behinderungsgerechtigkeit.

Augustus E. Wendell ist Assistenzprofessor für Praxis im Fachbereich Kunst, Kunstgeschichte und Visuelle Studien an der Duke University. Augustus hat seinen MFA in Computerkunst an der School of Visual Arts und sein grundständiges Studium an der Northeastern University absolviert. Augustus hatte Lehrverpflichtungen an der Parsons the New School for Design, der New York School of Interior Design, der Virginia Tech und dem New Jersey Institute of Technology. Augustus forscht über die Anwendung von Rechenprozessen in Design, bildender Kunst und historischer Forschung.
